Question: Could you please explain what an IBS diet entails?
Answer: An IBS diet is a treatment for people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. The diet that you should follow would depend on the type of irritable bowel syndrome you have.
Some people with IBS suffer from diarrhea while others become constipated. Obviously both groups of people would not be eating the same diet.
If you suffer from frequesnt diarrhea you will want to eat more foods that are high in fiber such as bran or cabbage. If you become constipated you will want to eat foods with simple sugars that are easy to break down such as bananas.
The actual foods themselves are usually not a problem as your physician can give you that list. The problem is that IBS is often aggravated by beverages such as coffee or wine. People are far less willing to cut back on these than they are willing to reduce foods that can trigger an attack.
Following a sensible diet for your IBS can be one of the best ways to avoid future attacks and can greatly lessen your symptoms.
An IBS diet can be obtained from your physician or dietitian and will be individually tailored to your specific type of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
