Question: What can I eat if I am on a diverticulitis diet? My insurance lapsed and I can’t see a doctor for at least a week. Thank you.

Answer: A diverticulitis diet will more than likely not be enough to heal you. There is often an infection which is causing the diverticulitis in the first place which needs to be treated by a physician.

Even if you have no insurance you need to see a doctor as soon as possible. Untreated infections can have serious consequences. Go to the local emergency room if you have no other option.

With that being said a diverticulitis diet is one that is meant to give the colon a break. It is typically very low in fiber and raw vegetables.

Here is a list of foods that are common in a low fiber diet:

  • White bread
  • Plain pasta
  • Poultry or fish
  • Eggs
  • Smooth peanut butter
  • Milk and yogurt
There are other food that are allowed, but you should ask the physician you are going to see what they are. Your doctor may also want you to go on a clear liquids diet which is fairly self-explanatory.
Hopefully your doctor will give you a fact sheet on everything that is allowed on a diverticulitis diet, but if not feel free to come back and check in again.
